Abstract: To investigate the effects of probiotics supplementation on intestinal symptoms and immunity of preterm infants. MethodsFifty preterm infants born and hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of our Hospital from June 2007 to December 2007 were randomly divided into the control group and the probiotic group. The probiotic group received probiotics on day 0 to 14 after birth. Intestinal symptoms were observed during hospitalization and blood samples were collected on day 14 to 16 after birth. ResultsThe number of warm brine enema of the probiotic group was lower than that of the control group [(0.36±0.70) vs (0.92±1.12), P<0.05]. The proportion of CD4+ T lymphocytes and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ were increased in the probiotic group, but the proportions of CD3+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes were not statistically changed in the probiotic group. The levels of immunoglobulin M and interlukine4 were increased in the probiotic group, but the level of IFNγand the ratio of IFNγ/ IL4 were not statistically changed in the probiotic group. ConclusionProbiotics could improve intestinal symptoms of preterm infants and have an obvious effect on their immunity.
