Abstract:

Objective〓〖WTBZ〗To investigate the correlation of serum NSE and S-100 protein concentrations with infarct volume and prognosis in acute ischmic stroke. 〖WTHZ〗Methods〓〖WTBZ〗58 patients in Shandong Provincial Hospital with acute ischemic stroke presenting less than 24 hours after symptom onset were incorporated into the study. Serum NSE and S-100 protein levels were determined on hospital admission and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10 days after symptom onset. Functional outcome in 3 months after stroke (modified Rankin scale score) and final infarct volume on day 7 were determined by means of standardized volumetry of brain images. 〖WTHZ〗Results〓〖WTBZ〗The NSE concentration reached a maximum on day 2. The peak blood level of S-100 proteinwas found on day 3. The level of NSE on day 2 was well correlated with the infarct volume(r=0.823, P<0.001), and the level of S-100 protein on day 3 was also well correlated with the infarct volume (r=0.937, P<0.001) and with the clinical outcome assessed with modified Rankin scale score (r=0.507, P<0.001). 〖WTHZ〗Conclusions〓〖WTBZ〗NSE and S-100 protein in blood during acute stroke are useful markers of infarct volume, and they may serve as easily accessible, inexpensive and valid prognostic markers in the future.
