Abstract:

Objective   To investigate the effect of olsalazine in combination with diammonium glycyrrhizinate on lipid peroxidation injury and IL-1β levels in patients with ulcerative colitis. Methods   66 patients were divided into a trial group (n=34) and a control group (n=32). Patients in the trial group were given olsalazine and diammonium glycyrrhizinate,  while those in the control group were given olsalazine only for a medication of 4 weeks. Plasma levels of ox-LDL, MDA, SOD and IL-1β in  both groups were  investigated  before and after the treatment, using a randomized and doubleblind approach. Results   Before the treatment, there were no significant differences between the two groups in ox-LDL, MDA, SOD and IL-1β levels(P>0.05). Also, in both groups, plasma levels of ox-LDL  were positively correlated with MDA (r=0.452, P=0.033), but negatively correlated with SOD (r=0.452, P=0.027). After  the treatment for the trial group, SOD increased significantly (P<0.05), while levels of ox-LDL, MDA and IL-1β  decreased significantly (P<0.05). Differences in these indexes were also statistically significant between two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion    Olsalazine in combination with diammonium glycyrrhizinate has significant effects on suppressing  IL-1β expression, leading to an apparent alleviation of lipid peroxidation-induced injuries in patients with ulcerative colitis.
