Correlation between hyperuricemi, Helicobacter pylori infection and metabolic syndrome

Abstract: Objective To explore the correlation among serum uric acid(SUA), infection of helicobacter pylori (Hp)and metabolic syndrome(MS)in order to provide epidemiological evidences to reduce incidence of MS. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 8 541 patients who met the inclusion standard, including 5 117 male and 3 424 female, aged 20~80(average 47.99±11.95)years. C-13 breath test-Hp and fasting blood biochemical examinations were conducted. According to age, the patients were divided into 3 groups: youth group(≤ 44 years), middle-aged group(45-59 years)and elderly group(≥ 60 years). According to the level of SUA, the patients were divided into SUA group and hyperuricemia(HUA)group. According to Hp status, the patients were divided into Hp+ and Hp- groups. According to the combination of SUA and HUA, the patients were divided into Hp- SUA, Hp+ SUA, Hp- HUA, and Hp+ HUA groups. The relationship between SUA, Hp infection and MS was analyzed with odds ratio and chi-square test. Results In the MS group, the male and female incidence rate was 22.1% and 9.0%, respectively, with statistical difference(P<0.05). The body mass index(BMI), systolic pressure(SBP), diastolic pressure(DBP), fasting blood glucose(FBG), triglyceride(TG)and Hp+ of MS group were higher than those of non-MS group(P<0.05), while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)was lower than that of non-MS(P<0.001). Sex, age and Hp infection were related to HUA and MS, but not to MS(P<0.05). In both male and female groups, Hp infection was not related to MS; HUA and HUA complicated with Hp infection increased the incidence of MS(P<0.05). Hp infection increased the incidence of MS in the elderly group(P<0.05); HUA and HUA complicated with Hp infection increased the incidence of MS in all age groups(P<0.05). Conclusion Gender and age are closely related to MS; HUA and Hp infection are risk factors of MS.
